At a glance
If you study at one of our partner universities, please get in contact with your own International Office. They need to nominate you first.
If you don’t study at one of HSD’s partner universities, you can apply as a free mover student. Please get in contact with us.
With your application for an exchange at HSD you can also apply for a room in the dormitories of Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf (no guarantee for a room due to limited capacities!).
The language requirements vary from faculty to faculty.
You must submit your complete application within the stated deadline via Mobility Online.

Exchange students from our partner universities

If you study at one of HSD’s partner universities, you first need to enquire at the International Office of your home university whether you can be nominated for an exchange at HSD.

Application procedure for exchange students

Your home university nominates you officially for an exchange at HSD.
You receive an e-mail from us with all the information on the application steps and a registration link for our application platform "Mobility Online". Please make sure to check your spam/junk mail folder as our e-mail might end up there.
You apply online through Mobility Online within the deadline.
We send you the Letter of Acceptance and all the information for your start at HSD.

Free Mover students

If there is no cooperation agreement between your home university and HSD, you can apply as a free mover student.

Application procedure for free mover students

Send us an e-mail saying that you would like to apply as a free mover student.
We will then send you an e-mail with all the information on the application procedure. Please make sure to check your spam/junk mail folder as our e-mail might end up there.
You apply online through Mobility Online within the deadline.
The respected faculty decides if they can accept you as a free mover.
If the faculty accepts your application, we send you the Letter of Acceptance and all the information for your start at HSD.

Please note: Due to limited capacities we CANNOT offer accommodation in the dormitories for free mover studens.

If you apply for the Faculty of Architecture or Design: Portfolio

Faculty of Architecture: B1 German or English
Faculty of Design: B1 German or English
Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology: B1 German
Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering: B1 German or English
Faculty of Media: B1 German for general lectures or B1 English for semester projects
Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies: B1 German or English
Faculty of Business Studies: B1 German or English

Application Deadlines

Winter Semester
Deadline for the dormitories: 15 May
General deadline: 15 June
Summer Semester
Deadline for the dormitories: 31 October
General deadline: 15 December
For an extension of stay exchange and free mover students must meet the general application deadlines.
