Getting ready for your semester abroad
With early preparation and support, a disability or chronic illness should not prevent you from spending a semester abroad.
As part of the Erasmus programme, students with a degree of disability can apply for special funding. For further information, please contact the International Office at your home university.
Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses are entitled to compensation for disadvantages. Examples of disadvantage compensation include extended writing time in exam situations, extended deadlines for assignments, changing the exam format from written to oral (or vice versa), and taking the exam in a separate room.
Several dormitories of Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf offer disabled-friendly accommodation.
Checklist for your semester abroad
- If you experience obstacles due to your disability and/or chronic illness, it is important that you inform the Incoming Team at the International Office of HSD as soon as possible, preferably already via your online application form. Incoming students with special needs are advised and supported by Ms. Eva Deuß (email: incoming@hs-duesseldorf.de)
- Apply for support measures as early as possible, so these can be arranged before the start of your exchange at HSD.
- It is important that you take the initiative yourself. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it. If we cannot help you, we will refer you to the right contact person and find a solution.
- Take enough time for yourself and take moments of rest so you do not become exhausted.
- Share your condition with your fellow students and lecturers if this can help you. This is to inform them of the obstacles you experience, so they can take this into account or support you.
