Sustainable Travel

HSD > Prospective Students > Exchange Students > Sustainable Travel

At a glance

  • Your semester abroad is approaching, and with it the decision of how to travel to Duesseldorf.

  • We would like to encourage you to consider environmentally friendly modes of transport whenever possible as international travel makes a major contribution to CO2 emissions.

  • It is therefore worth thinking about how you can organise your journey to Duesseldorf sustainably when preparing for your trip.

Travelling by train or bus

  • For travelling in Europe, climate-friendly means of transport such as trains or long-distance buses are available.
  • Of course, travel times by train and bus are sometimes significantly longer than by plane. However, you will not need a luggage scale and you will have the opportunity to plan your trip in stages, allowing you to get to know the places between your home university and Duesseldorf.
  • Duesseldorf Central Station is one of the busiest long-distance railway stations in Germany and also has a central bus station, which is served by various bus companies.
  • Interesting for Erasmus+ participants: The Erasmus program supports the choice of environmentally friendly means of transport financially with the Green Travel Grant.
  • Erasmus+ participants could also organise the arrival or departure as an interrail trip: The Erasmus+ Interrail Pass offers a unique opportunity to explore Europe. It allows you to travel freely throughout Europe for four or six days of your choice within a six-month period. Not only will you save money, but you will also be able to explore the diversity of Europe – a great opportunity to enrich your Erasmus experience with additional discoveries.

Travelling by plane

  • When travelling from overseas, there is usually no alternative to flying. Did you know that many emissions and pollutants are emitted during take-offs and landings in particular? Direct flights are therefore more climate-friendly.
  • As digital documents are usually sufficient, we recommend to print out travel documents only if necessary.
  • To reduce weight and thus CO2 emissions, you can only take as much luggage as you really need.
