Save Energy @ HSD!

​​​​To avoid a gas shortage, EU gas consumption must be reduced by 15% this winter. Germany must cut 20%. Hochschule Düsseldorf – University of Applied Sciences wants to meet the savings targets in order to maintain operations and to avoid emergency scenarios such as closures.


These measures are also necessary to reduce the additional costs caused by the sharp rise in energy prices. HSD as a public institution is required to implement energy-saving measures since 1 September 2022.


With a few exceptions, HSD covers its heating requirements exclusively by district heating. Heating for the district of Derendorf is provided by Lausward gas-fired power plant and the combined heat and power plant in Flingern. Lausward power plant produces natural-gas-based electricity and heat for the district heating network in Düsseldorf.
Buildings 7 and 10 are not connected to the district heating system, but are heated by gas water heaters.

Some energy-saving measures have already been implemented centrally, such as lowering the heating temperature and switching off the permanent lighting of the corridors. However, to reach the saving targets, the sum of many individual contributions of all members of HSD are important.

reduce heat consumption

According to the federal energy conservation regulation, offices and seminar rooms may only be heated to a maximum of 19 °C.

​Maximum of 19 °C in Offices and Seminar Rooms

From 1 September 2022, offices and seminar rooms in public bui​ldings may only be heated to a maximum temperature of 19 °C. This is regulated by the EnSikuMaV, a regulation by the Federal Government (available in German only).

This temperature is reached when you set the thermostat to approximately one line before level 3.

The room temperature is controlled by HSD Facility Management. If the temperature differs significantly, please get in touch with the Facility Management.

Unheated Corridors

Corridors in public buildings may no longer be heated from 1 September 2022. We are making sure that the radiators in the corridors are protected against frost (this means heating of up to 7 °C). This is regulated by the EnSikuMaV, a regulation by the Federal Government (available in German only). Please keep the doors closed during the heating period so the heat does not escape to the corridors.

Heating at Night

At night, heating is reduced by 8 to 10 Kelvin.

Reduce energy consumption

To save energy means to also save gas. HSD has switched off the permanent lighting of the corridors during opening hours, among other measures taken to save energy.

No Permanent Lighting

Permanent lighting of the corridors has been switched off on 6 September.
The corridor lighting can be turned on at any time for a limited time using the light switches. As an exception, the permanent lighting in the basement corridors has not been shut off. To ensure minimum brightness at all times, the emergency lighting in the floors has been switched on.

LED Lights

We are gradually replacing the lights in the corridors with LED lights. The first 400 LEDs have been installed in building 5 in May 2022. Presence detectors with daylight sensors will also be installed in corridors and stairwells. We are currently testing them in two corridors.

Audio Induction Loop

At HSD, 42 rooms are equipped with audio frequency induction loops for inductive hearing. The hearing induction loops in the media podiums are installed by Campus IT. By turning off the hearing induction loops, between 14–25 watts are saved.

All members of HSD are asked to save energy. With easy measures, we can achieve a lot together.

Thermostats at one Line before Level 3

Please do not turn down or off the thermostats after work or after the end of the course. The thermostats must not be set to ‘0’ at any time, they should always be set to one line before level 3.

The whole heating system is set to energy-saving mode in the evening by the Facility Management.

Tip: Clear radiators of furniture that may be in the way. Only then can the radiator work properly and heat the room to the desired temperature.

Warm Clothing

Wear warm clothing so you will not be cold at 19 °C indoors.
Clothes with high wool content tend to store heat well.

Light

Switch off the light when you leave the room. This is worth it even in case of a short absence.

Please switch off the lighting in rooms that are not currently used.

If there is enough sunlight, switch off the electrical lighting.

Turn Off Devices

Avoid standby mode whenever possible. Turn off devices you no longer need.

Ventilation

Whenever necessary, ventilate efficiently during the cold season: Open all windows and doors to enable cross-ventilation. Afterwards, shut all windows and doors properly. This way, air is exchanged efficiently and the room keeps its heat. Avoid tilting the windows for ventilation, as this is energetically inefficient. During the heating period, 5–10 minutes of ventilation are enough.

Please keep the doors to unheated areas, such as the corridors, closed to minimise energy loss.

If your room is connected to a ventilation system, please keep the windows shut. Thanks to heat recovery, the ventilation system is the most effective way of ventilation.

Using the Right Doors

To reduce cooling of the buildings, please only use doors that prevent draft, such as the revolving doors available in some of the buildings. Please avoid using side entrances and barrier-free entryways, if possible.

Stairs instead of Lift

Use the stairs instead of the lift. This saves energy and keeps you healthy.

Always Turn Off Projector

Make sure to put the projector into standby mode before leaving the room, as it cannot be turned off completely. Use the touch display or the keypad to do so.

Give your devices a break. Standby mode is already worth it for a break of only 15 minutes.

No Fan Heaters

The EnSikuMaV, a regulation by the Federal Government, regulates in section 6 subsection (2) that the use of fan heaters which contribute to exceeding the stipulated maximum temperatures is not allowed.
