Unlike in many other countries, securing a place at university in Germany does not automatically guarantee accommodation. Students have to find a room or flat themselves.
Student halls of residence
Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf provides a large number of rooms for students in halls of residence. Rents are on average more than a third cheaper than on the private housing market. Halls of residence also have the advantage of often being located close to the university, making it easy to get to know fellow students.
The wide range of accommodation on offer extends from single rooms and flats to shared flats and family flats for students with children. Some halls of residence have flats equipped with barrier-free facilities.
Please note: Places in halls of residence are limited and, in most cases, applicants are initially placed on a waiting list. We therefore recommend that you apply for a place in one of the halls of residence as early as possible!

Most students live in shared flats ("WGs"), where each resident has their own room and the kitchen and bathroom are shared. Rooms in shared flats are often an affordable option, as you can share many costs (internet, TV licence fees, electricity, etc.) with your flatmates. What’s more, you can quickly make friends.
Having your own flat is generally the most expensive form of student accommodation. On the other hand, you don’t have to share the kitchen and bathroom with others and can arrange everything to suit your own preferences.
