preparatory German language coursE

Since October 2017, the International Office of Hochschule Düsseldorf - University of Applied Sciences (HSD) has been offering free preparatory German courses to prepare prospective students with and without a refugee background for studying at C1 level.

Starting in June 2025, HSD will again offer a preparatory intensive German course as part of the "NRWege ins Studium" program. The course is intended for international prospective students, both with and without a refugee background, who have a residence perspective and higher education eligibility. The German course is free of charge and ends with a language exam that grants access to studies in Germany (TestDaF, DSH, telc, or IIK C1). In addition to the German language classes, the program includes workshops and other events to optimally prepare students for studying in Germany.

Information about the programme:

  • The course program will be conducted by an external language institute.
  • After applying, applicants will take a placement test and, if accepted, will receive German lessons according to their learning level, starting from B1.2
  • The results of the applications, as well as the acceptances and rejections, will be communicated via email in the third week of May.
  • The scheduling of the courses (morning or afternoon) may change monthly. The International Office has no influence on whether participants are assigned to a morning or afternoon course.
  • After successfully completing the program, participants who start a degree at HSD can apply for a scholarship.
  • Participation is only available to individuals who have lived in Germany for less than 5 years on the day of application or who have previously participated in an "NRWege ins Studium" project.
  • The duration of the program is up to 7 months and concludes with an external final exam.
  • Participation in the preparatory German course is free of charge. Course materials will be provided to participants free of charge.
  • During the program, participants are required to attend at least three workshops offered by the International Office.
  • Course participants are not regular students of HSD. They will not receive a student ID or the semester ticket.
  • The university entrance qualification (HZB) will be only checked for the participation in the German course. No preliminary decision is made regarding whether this qualification is sufficient for the desired degree program. A re-evaluation will take place when applying for a degree program later.
